Europe's first supermarket with resource-saving food production on the rooftop opened in Wiesbaden, Germany at the end of May 2021. Perches and basil are cohabiting in an, at first glance, unusual community: the 2,000 m² building-integrated rooftop farm of the innovative REWE store.  The concept is called aquaponics. Put simply, the fish's excrements are used to fertilize the plants. The water purified by the plants in turn flows back to the fish. It's a perfect cycle that is revolutionizing urban food production. The greenhouse production facility above the heads of supermarket customers guarantees locally produced, environmentally friendly food with a small CO2 foodprint.
